Vietjet Air – Asia's Low-cost Airline
Before VietJet started flying, Vietnam's airline market had very little competition. That changed in 2011. With low fares and regular promotions, VietJet quickly attracted first-time flyers as well as passengers who had previously travelled by coach or train. Within a few years, flying had become a more affordable option for many people.
To keep fares low, VietJet follows a different business model from traditional airlines. Passengers decide which extra services they want to pay for instead of having everything included in the ticket price. The airline also operates a largely uniform fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, reducing maintenance and training costs while keeping daily operations simpler.
Today, VietJet serves destinations throughout Vietnam as well as many cities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, China, and India. The airline has also expanded its presence overseas through VietJet Thailand. Its fleet now includes more than 100 aircraft, including the Airbus A320, A321neo, A330-300, and the Boeing 737 MAX. Every year, the airline carries millions of passengers on domestic and international routes.
Unlike many traditional airlines, VietJet has built its brand around a younger and more informal image. Its advertising campaigns often target young travellers and people flying for leisure. Some campaigns have attracted public debate, but they have also made the airline one of the best-known brands in Vietnam. At the same time, VietJet continues to operate under international aviation safety requirements, including the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).
In recent years, the airline has invested more heavily in technology. Online booking, mobile check-in, and digital management systems have become an important part of its daily operations. VietJet has also announced plans to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and introduce other measures to reduce carbon emissions as part of its long-term environmental strategy.
Since launching its first commercial flight in 2011, VietJet has expanded rapidly. The airline now carries millions of passengers each year on both domestic and international routes. Affordable fares have encouraged more people to travel by air, especially on routes that were once dominated by trains and long-distance buses.
