Vietnam Airlines is the national carrier of Vietnam. Its history goes back to the early years of Vietnamese civil aviation after the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority was established in 1956. In 1993, the airline officially adopted the name Vietnam Airlines and introduced the Golden Lotus as its new logo. Since then, the blue-and-gold design has become the airline's official identity.

For many years, the airline operated mainly domestic services with a small fleet of Soviet-built aircraft, including the TU-134 and Yak-40. As Vietnam's economy expanded after the Doi Moi reforms, air travel increased, and Vietnam Airlines gradually added more international routes. Flights to Bangkok and Paris were among the first to be introduced, followed by destinations across Asia, Europe, and Australia. At the same time, older aircraft were retired and replaced with newer Airbus and Boeing models.

Today, the airline operates more than 100 aircraft. The fleet includes the Airbus A350-900, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, and the Airbus A321neo, which are used on both domestic and international routes. These aircraft offer quieter cabins, lower fuel consumption, and improved passenger comfort. On long-haul flights, passengers can use personal entertainment screens, while Business Class seats can be converted into fully flat beds. Flight crews, engineers, and maintenance staff receive regular training to meet international aviation safety standards.

The airline's network has also grown significantly. Vietnam Airlines now flies to destinations throughout Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America. In 2010, it became a member of the SkyTeam alliance, allowing passengers to connect with hundreds of destinations through partner airlines and enjoy shared services such as frequent flyer benefits and airport lounges.

Environmental sustainability has become one of Vietnam Airlines' long-term priorities. In recent years, the airline has introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on selected services, adopted digital technologies to support flight operations, and reduced the use of single-use plastics on board.

Vietnam Airlines is also known for incorporating Vietnamese cultural elements into its services. The Golden Lotus logo, the cabin crew's traditional ao dai, and Vietnamese-inspired meals help distinguish the airline from many other international carriers.
